Application of biochar technologies to wastewater treatment.
This study aims to develop and evaluate activated biochars that will have potential to be used as active filter media for adsorpting pollutants from wastewaters. Activated biochar will be developed from eucalyptus and pine feedstocks by adopting pre-pyrolysis treatments. Various cost-effective waste alkaline materials will be tested for their ability to activate biochar. Properties of treated and untreated biochars will be investigated in relation to acidic functional groups, surface area and ammonium adsorption properties. The potential use of treated biochar as a slow release fertiliser will also be evaluatedContact
